Surgical Specialties

General

General surgery focuses on the abdominal contents including esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, colorectal, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix. Also can include soft tissue, thyroid, and breast. You will also often see them perform endoscopy or colonoscopies. Depending on the area where you live and where you work, general surgeons will be more or less specialized. There are often specialties within general, such as breast, oncology or peripheral vascular.

These surgeries focus on the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints and ligaments. Some sub-specialties within orthopedics include arthroscopy, total joints, trauma, foot and ankle, and shoulder. Orthopedic surgery can be fast paced and fun to work in.
